Helisafe 50th - 410-0000

Overview

The HeliSafe 50 percentile Male dummy was developed as a test instrument for the European HeliSafe helicopter safety program sponsored by the TNO Crash Safety Center starting in the year 2000. The 50th percentile dummy is an adaptation of a Hybrid III automotive dummy modified for FAA aircraft testing. Required modifications for the HeliSafeprogram included an erect seating posture,weight redistribution, accommodation of thorax deflection measurement with a modified abdomen, and the addition of  accelerometers to the thoracic spine.

Dummy Design

The 50 dummy is an FAA dummy Hybrid II-Hybrid III combination using Hybrid II upper leg bones, a straight lumbar spine with adapters, a modified Hybrid II abdomen, a Hybrid II chest jacket, and additional accel mounts in the upper torso. This gives the dummy an erect seated posture and the ability to measure chest deflection as well as vertical and horizontal spinal column loads.
 
The dummy is constructed of steel and aluminum skeleton covered by urethane skin and vinyl foam. The neck and lumbar are rubber elements. Transducer replacements insure a complete structure if the actual transducers are not mounted. The construction is modular for ease of replacement, assembly and disassembly with articulated joints simulating human motion. The pelvis is molded in the seated position. Access is provided to the components for mounting accelerometers.

Testing

The head, neck, thorax, and knees of the dummy are lab tested to conform to Federal rules for the 50th.
