VIP 3 Year Old Dummy - SA103C002

The 3 Year Old Child Test Dummy (SA103CO01) is based on an Alderson Research Laboratories dummy VI P-3C with minor modifications. This dummy was adopted into the Federal Code in 1979 (49 CFR Part 572 Subpart C) and is mandated for use in testing child safety restraint systems to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 213 (FMVSS 213).
Anthropometry of the 3 Year Old Child Test Dummy conforms to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) requirements. Its acceptability for use as a test standard was verified by NHTSA sponsored testing programs in 1983 and 1984.
The sit-stand construction adapts the dummy for use in pedestrian impact studies. It may also be used for safety evaluations of furniture, specialty vehicles and other potential injury producing environments.
Construction
The 3 Year Old Test Dummy accommodates two head designs:
- Type 1: OBSOLETE (As of September 1, 1993 no longer an option in Federal Code) urethane skull with zippered vinyl head flesh.
- Type 2 is a cast fiberglass skull and skull cap with form fit urethane skin and cap skin.
- Type 3 features Type 2 construction, with improved anthropometry, that accommodates a multi-vertebrae neck with load cell capability.
Skull cap is removable on all heads for access to accelerometer mounting cavity and neck mount hardware. Type 2 head is specified in the Federal Code.
Cylindrical rubber neck assembly, specified for Type 2 heads, is mounted directly to the skull base plate and thoracic spine assembly. The fixed angle between the neck and the torso is determined by the construction details of the thoracic spine. The neck for the Type 3 head features separate rubber vertebrae connected by thin aluminum discs and mounts for force and moment transducers.
- Upper and lower torsos are covered by one-piece urethane foam flesh and rear zippered vinyl skin.
Rib cage structure is one-piece cast solid urethane connected to rear of steel weldment thoracic spine. Torso instrument cavity at rear mounts three uniaxial accelerometers. Clavicle structure is mounted to thoracic spine with rod and ball clavicle links held in common carrier at front of thoracic spine. Cast clavicles simulate scapulae.
- Cylindrical lumbar spine assembly connects directly to pelvic structure and to the thoracic spine with an adapter.
- Cast bronze pelvis forms ilia with aluminum weldment for hip ball joint sockets.
Arms are held at the shoulder abduction joints by pivot screws that adjust and control frictional load. Forearms and hands, capable of limited flexion motion, are integrally molded.
Technical Specifications
Materials
The following materials used in the dummy construction are required by Federal Code.
- Steel skeletal components with some aluminum and bronze joints
- (See above for head materials.)
- Natural rubber neck
- Vinyl skin chest jacket covering a separate urethane foam chest flesh
- Natural rubber lumbar spine
- Vinyl skin and vinyl foam flesh arms and legs
Instrumentation
Three uniaxial accelerometers in the head and chest are specified as standard instrumentation for laboratory testing. Optional instrumentation for Type 3 head includes multi-axis force and moment transducers in neck region.
